Award-winning projects will help Britain achieve its energy ambitions
2022-11-29
The UK has taken a giant leap towards achieving its energy ambitions with the signing of leases for 8GW of new offshore wind projects. The award-winning projects, which will be located in different parts of Britain's coast, have the potential to provide power for nearly a quarter of UK households.
Dan Labbad, CEO of Crown Estate, who owns the seabed where these projects are being built, highlighted their great value to the nation – jobs and investment opportunities for communities, clean energy and revenue for taxpayers while also taking into consideration biodiversity. The six successful projects include BP in collaboration with German utility company EnBW as well as TotalEnergies partnering up with global offshore wind specialist Corio. Meanwhile, RWE is pushing forward the 3GW Dogger Bank South (East and West) ventures in the North Sea. The projects selected during February's auction have since gone through rigorous Habitats Regulation Assessments and are now preparing to enter UK planning system for major projects before seeking development consent, which would allow them to take part in government auctions for Contract-For-Difference (CfD) power deals.
By 2030, these developments could help the UK reach its target of having 50GW installed – four times what is currently available. This significant progress towards renewable energy sources marks a huge milestone in Britain's efforts towards achieving a more sustainable future.
