Italian energy giants team up for floating wind farms
2022-12-07
European oil giant Eni owned Plenitude and Irish offshore renewables developer Simply Blue have joined forces in order to construct a giga-scale pipeline of floating wind projects off Italy. This venture will start with two deepwater arrays, the 1.3GW Messapia and 1.1GW Krimsa, located in the Ionian Sea. It is estimated that these developments will be able to produce power for some 2.5 million households in the region once finished.
Plenitude CEO Stefano Goberti commented on this partnership by stating “This collaboration allows us to expand our portfolio of floating wind projects as part of our target of reaching 15GW of renewable capacity by 2030 while committing to creating an offshore wind supply chain in Italy”. Simply Blue group CEO Sam Roch-Perks echoed this sentiment, noting “Italy represents a great opportunity for floating wind and we are looking forward to combining our expertise to provide real solutions to the climate crisis”.
The Messapia project, located 30km from the Otranto coast, is estimated to generate around 3.8TWh annually while Krimsa project, 45km off the coast of Crotone will produce 3.5TWh a year. Both plans have been submitted to authorities and Plenitude and Simply Blue will continue to work with local communities as well as other industry players in order to develop technology that allows for a fully decarbonised energy supply by 2040.

Plenitude is an integral part of Eni’s decarbonisation strategy and has been involved with energy efficiency services, electric mobility, renewable energy production and sales in a variety of countries including the US, Italy, Greece, Norway, Portugal and Australia. Meanwhile Simply Blue is quickly become one of the world’s most prominent floating wind developers with 10GW worth of projects on their home market as well as the UK in partnership with Orsted, Shell and TotalEnergies planned for Sweden, the US and Iberia.
DNV consultancy claims that by 2050 over 15% of total offshore winds deployment will be thanks to floating wind technology amounting to some 264GW out of 1.75TW slated for installation. This partnership between Plenitude and Simply Blue is an important step in the right direction as we move closer to a fully decarbonised future.
