Alternative to traditional lithium battery technologies
2023-01-01
American Battery Factory (ABF) has selected Tuscon, Arizona as the site for its first gigafactory, with an estimated capital investment of $1.2 billion. This 2-million square foot facility is expected to provide 300 jobs initially and scale up to 1,000 over time. Paul Charles, ABF's CEO, also announced that Tuscon will become the company's headquarters.
The move comes in response to the increasing demand for energy storage and electric vehicle market and seeks to offer an alternative to traditional lithium battery technologies that don't require the use of cobalt. There is also a momentum surrounding onshoring battery cell manufacturing away from China due to industry and geopolitical reasons. Our Next Energy (ONE) recently announced its own plans to invest $1.6 billion in a battery cell manufacturing facility in Michigan with an annual capacity of 20 GWh by 2027 and incentives worth $236 million pending approval by state lawmakers.

ABF is looking to onshore its supply chain and integrate materials refinement with its Massachusetts-based partner 6K Energy into the manufacturing process. The relationship between 6K Energy and Albemarle, a global supplier of lithium, will also be maintained to bring energy independence closer to reality for everyone.
