SolarDuck, a joint venture between Dutch and Norwegian firms, has been awarded a EUR-7.8 million (USD 8m) subsidy from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). This money will be used to construct a 500-kWp pilot floating solar power installation in the North Sea as part of a consortium that includes research institutes TU Delft, TNO, MARIN and Deltares. The DEI+ programme will fund this project, which is set to extend until the end of 2024.

The Merganser platform consists of six interconnected platforms and upon successful completion of testing, SolarDuck CTO Don Hoogendoorn announced that it has obtained an Approval in Principal from Bureau Veritas. The project aims to develop the requirements for a commercial-scale 5 MWp project and will be a part of Hollandse Kust West VII offshore wind park.

The North Sea has great potential for floating solar power, and this is just one of many initiatives that aim to harness its renewable energy capabilities. SolarDuck strives to create innovative solutions in the development of renewables, providing a sustainable future for generations to come.
