Approvals and development for Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub

2023-01-27

Asia-Pacific-focused renewables developer Equis Development Pte Ltd has just taken over an AUD-1.9 billion (USD 1.28bn/EUR 1.23bn) battery energy storage project near Melbourne, Victoria and relaunching it with a new name and enhanced capacity. Originally called the Melton Renewable Energy Hub, the scheme was developed by Australian developer Syncline Energy earlier in 2021. Following a hundred percent change in ownership, this initiative is now rebranded as the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (MREH).

Although financial details remain undisclosed, Equis has declared that the MREH will be one of the largest batteries both in Australia and Asia – consisting of 1200MW/2400MWh. The project is designed with six separate facilities, each of which will be connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via designated connection points. Construction for phase one (600MW) will begin in 2023 while all necessary planning and environmental permits are already secured. Equis also predicted that MREH's battery capacity can support 1.6GW of solar or 1.2 GW of wind power generation. David Russell, Equis Managing Director said “The scale and uniqueness of MREH’s approvals and development make it capable of providing both short-term and long-term storage and response services catering to the changing demands of the National Electricity Market.”
