US maker of thin-film photovoltaics (PV) First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) revealed that it has committed to investing around USD 1.1 billion (EUR 1.06bn) to build a 3.5-GW DC vertically integrated module production facility in Lawrence County, North Alabama with the aim of making it operational by 2025.

Moreover, the opening of the plant is projected to generate 700 direct jobs. This project is part of a wider expansion plan for First Solar’s US manufacturing capacity, seeking to reach more than 10 GW by 2025.

The company already has three factories in Ohio and intends to open an R&D innovation center there too. One factory is currently under construction and is scheduled to be operational in the first half of 2021. Additionally, expansion works are being carried out on two active factories in Perrysburg and Lake Township, Northwest Ohio, to increase their Series 6 module manufacturing capabilities by 0.9 GW DC. Altogether, First Solar estimates that its total investment in US manufacturing will amount to USD 4 billion. This should allow the company to significantly expand its presence across America’s PV industry.
